Our History
Charles Shumway was an enthusiast for education. He and his family left Sturbridge, Massachusetts and moved out West to Illinois. There, they met missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints and were baptized as members. Along with countless others, the Shumways were persecuted for their religious beliefs and moved further west.
Along their travels, they met Joseph Smith Jr. and Brigham Young. Charles Shumway was a devoted man whom Brigham Young sent on several church missions. Eventually, Charles settled in Shumway, Arizona, where he opened the first Shumway School.

LaVyrle Jones, a descendant of Charles Shumway, has a strong passion for educating children. She started teaching children out of her home 1996. In 2001, with the help of her sister Delores, Shumway Academy was founded as a non-profit school. It has gone through many changes over the years, but the emphasis has always been on providing an excellent education for our children.
